After hundreds of hours of R&D and thousands of miles of real world on and off-road testing, ICON engineers have developed products that provide a true performance upgrade over the factory components found on the 2021-2025 Ford F-150 Raptor. The Gen. 3 Raptor is faster and more advanced than its older brother – with an all-new 4-link and coil sprung rear suspension system with lots of performance potential and new technology introduced both on the side of safety and performance. In typical ICON fashion, the new Raptor was pushed to its limits in stock trim to build a list of performance “needs and wants”. After this process, the ICON engineering team began to go over the truck front to rear to identify any opportunities to overcome the limits of the OE suspension and achieve the gains laid out in the previous phases of R&D.
The front-end geometry of the Gen. 3 Raptor was found to be very similar to the previous model truck, so the team was able to improve upon the design with a 3.0 Series coilover that has more shaft travel while utilizing a barreled coil spring for more efficient packaging. The vehicle-specific valving featured in these shocks and the ICON-engineered spring work together to provide exceptional on-road ride quality with excellent off-road characteristics. ICON’s multi-stage hydraulic “Bump Zone” adds to the performance capability by providing an exponential increase in damping ability during the last 40% of compression travel for superior bottom-out resistance. In the ride zone, these 3.0 Series coilovers see an increase in damping ability with the use of a significantly larger piston than what is found in the factory shocks. Finned aluminum reservoirs provide a generous amount of shock oil while also providing an increase in surface area (over 200%) for enhanced cooling and consistent damping.
ICON's exclusive Compression Damping Electronic Valves are included for actively dialing in your suspension performance and improve upon the functionality provided by the factory active shock system. Compression Damping Electronic Valve (CDEV) is an electronically controlled valve that meters the flow of oil to regulate the amount of damping force that is created by the shock when compressed. This infinitely variable valve can react in less than 40ms and has the ability to make extremely precise adjustments for varying terrain. CDEV’s hydraulic circuits are also custom tailored per application to create the highest resolution and dynamic range allowable for each specific vehicle. Powered by ICON Intelligent Control (IIC) and proprietary ICON mobile app, the system uses information from the onboard G-force sensor and Gyroscope to perform calculations based on algorithms and user-defined settings to predict terrain and adjust shock settings via the CDEV accordingly. With the shock absorbers no longer directly wired to the Raptor's ECU the IIC/CDEV system also allows drivers to dial in their preferred shock damping settings independently from the selected vehicle drive mode and with more refined resolution than afforded by the factory system. This allows for a more customized vehicle set up with the perfect blend of comfort and performance.
ICON's billet aluminum upper control arms are designed with built-in caster correction for predictable handling and feature on-vehicle camber/caster adjustment for precise vehicle alignment. These upper control arms include ICON's patented Delta Joint Pro, ICON's innovative new suspension articulation joint which combines the durability and longevity of factory style ball joints with performance and strength that exceeds traditional motorsports-style ball joints. Strength and durability are improved by using a larger ball with 56% more bearing surface than our standard Delta Joint, along with improved lubrication sealing. But improved performance is at the heart of the Delta Joint Pro, with a full 90 degrees of articulation, from one extreme to the other. This represents a 14% improvement in range of motion, over the highly capable original Delta Joint, allowing for maximum bind-free suspension movement through the complete range of travel. The Delta Joint Pro is built to take the abuse, with a chromoly ball and shaft that has a bearing surface hardened to Rockwell C 55. The replaceable races are made of graphite-impregnated sintered metal, machined to the finest tolerance to provide a flawless, metal-to-metal bearing interface. We also redesigned the lubrication system, with lubricant channels that distribute grease more efficiently without extending past the bearing seal.
The rear of the updated Ford Raptor was a highlight for ICON engineers, as new changes proved to be for the better. In the R&D process it was found that Gen. 3 had more available wheel travel than was being utilized by factory components, and by way of an offset upper eyelet ICON engineers laid out a 3.0 Series bypass shock that maximized travel while utilizing the factory shock mounts, for up to 17” of total rear wheel travel! To control the rear end in specific ranges of travel, these shocks feature 3 unique bypass zones – 2 on the compression stroke and one rebound. Unlike other shocks that have a loud bypass “click” when functioning, ICON bypass valves feature damped valve stops for quiet and precise operation. Easy-to-adjust knobs allow for quick changes to shock tuning without the need for tools, enabling the user to dial in their ride with minimal down time. ICON's Compression Damping Electronic Valve (CDEV) is also included for actively dialing in compression damping force, fully independently from the bypass valve settings. A 3.0” Dual Hose Recirculating Finned Reservoir (Patent Pending) incorporates a check valve that allows hot fluid in the shock body to be exchanged with cooler fluid in the reservoir, resulting in the ability for the Raptor to be driven harder for longer periods of time without the worry of shock fade and degraded performance. ICON’s patented Anti-Wobble Link stabilizes the shocks to prevent rotation and possible collision. Additionally, urethane shin guards protect the shock shafts and rod ends under grueling off-road conditions.
To compliment ICON's rear 3.0 Series bypass shocks, ICON engineers decided to scrap the OE rear coil springs and develop a replacement that addressed a couple issues found in the R&D process. ICON Triple Rate rear coil springs for 2021-2025 Ford F-150 Raptor provides a modest increase in ground clearance while greatly enhancing on- and off-road performance, especially when used with ICON shocks and suspension components. The triple-rate coil design combines a performance ride rate for compliance and comfort, with an overload rate for load and bottom out resistance, and an extra soft initial rate for maximum droop travel. A unique tapered wire design helps achieve maximum travel and efficiency and an extra-long free height ensures the coils stay seated in their coil buckets for up to 17” of droop travel. In addition, these springs are also designed to net 1" of rear lift on a stock weight Gen3 Raptor for a more aggressive stance and increased fender clearance for larger wheels and tires. Like all ICON coil springs, these feature a lifetime guarantee against sagging/breakage to provide confidence in knowing that you have the best suspension products available for the 2021-2025 Ford F-150 Raptor.
Holistic Engineering - the ICON Difference: When developing suspension components for a new vehicle, ICON takes a different approach than many others. Rather than focusing in on one particular part, ICON engineers look at the vehicle as a whole, identify inherent strengths and weaknesses, and set a target for performance. With a focus on maximizing wheel travel and improving ride quality, ICON will develop components that address (and often times replace) OE limiting factors. This "holistic engineering" philosophy often results in the development of several parts designed to work together as a system to provide a balanced on and off-road performance upgrade. Because ICON is designing and manufacturing all of the components necessary to improve the performance of a vehicle from front
